Treatment for Autism

August 11, 2008 |

Conventional treatment: To this day, there are no medications available that can cure Autism: however, there are medications that can help treat the symptoms. Medications may help with a child that has an inability to focus, exhibits extreme hyperactivity, depression, or has seizures.

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of risperidone (an antipsychotic) to treat 5- to 16-year- old children who have severe tantrums, aggression, and self-injurious behavior (FDA, 2007). A childs progress and reactions while they are taking this medication should be closely observed.

Other conventional therapy include applied behavior analysis(ABA) therapy (ABA is a very intensive system of reward-based training which focuses on teaching particular skill), speech therapy, occupational therapy, play therapy, music therapy, physical therapy, and others.

Unconventional treatment: Some parents may use treatments that are outside of conventional medicine. They may include special gluten-free and casein-free diet(wheat and dairy free), vitamin supplements, Vitamin B12 Shots, probiotics, hyberbaric chamber, chelation (a treatment to remove heavy metals like lead from the body), or body-based systems such as craniosacral therapy, D.A.N. (It stands for Defeat Autism Now) doctor.

Some mothers have reported a huge change in their children behavior, sometimes even recovery from autism using these unconventional approach.

First Steps: click on First Steps to biomedical interventions may include these.
