Possible Warning Signs for Autism Spectrum Disorders
Thirty percent of autistic children suffer from seizures, as was the case with Jenny McCarthy’s son, Evan.
Children with an autism spectrum disorder might:
• Not play “pretend” games, such as pretending to “feed” a doll or pretending to drive a truck
• Look at things or toys out of the corner of their eye
• Ignore you when you call their name
• Have trouble relating to you or not have an interest in other people at all
• Avoids eye contact and wants to be alone
• Have trouble understanding other people’s feelings or talking about their own feelings
• Prefer not to be held or cuddled or might cuddle only when they want to
• Appear to be unaware when other people talk to them but respond to other sounds
• Be very interested in people, but not know how to talk to, play with, or relate to them
• Repeat or echo words or phrases said to them, or repeat words or phrases in place of normal language (echolalia)
• Have trouble expressing their needs using typical words or motions
• Repeat actions over and over again such as flapping their arms
• Have trouble adapting to changes in routine
• Have unusual reactions to the way things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound. They may over-react to loud noise
• Lose skills they once had (for instance, stop saying words they were once using)
• Walk on their toes
• Stare at fans or spinning objects
• Play with door hinges instead of toys
• Buddha belly, severe constipation, diarrhea and other gut issues
• Short attention span and hyperactive
• Causes self-injury to themselves such as banging their head.
• Temper tantrum, abnormal moods or emotional reaction. They may laugh or cry at unusual times.
Some children demonstrate characteristics of autism within the first few months of life, others not until 24 months or even later. Some children with autism seem to develop normally until 18–24 months of age and then they stop gaining new language and social skills, or they lose the skills they had.
